Free Tokens Are Great, But Read This First
Imagine waking up to find someone deposited free money into your bank account. No purchase required, no strings attached, just… there. That is basically what a crypto airdrop is. And yes, they are real. But before you start dreaming of early retirement, there are a few important things to know.
The Basics: What Is an Airdrop?
A crypto airdrop is when a blockchain project distributes free tokens directly to a list of wallet addresses. Projects do this for all kinds of reasons: to reward loyal users, to build awareness, or to put their token into as many hands as possible right from the start.
Think of it like a business handing out free samples at a grand opening. The company wants you to try their product, talk about it, and hopefully come back for more. The token is the sample, and your crypto wallet is the shopping bag.
How Do You Actually Get One?
There are a few ways people receive airdrops:
- Hold the right token: Some projects send free tokens to everyone who holds a specific cryptocurrency in their wallet on a particular date. It is like a snapshot loyalty reward.
- Be an early adopter: Used a platform before it had its own token? You might qualify for a “retroactive airdrop,” a genuine thank-you from the project for believing in them early.
- Complete small tasks: Some airdrops ask you to follow a social account, join a Discord, or sign up for updates in exchange for tokens.
Sometimes the tokens just show up in your wallet with no action needed at all.
Here Comes the Warning (Sorry, It Had to Happen)
Not every “free token” offer is legit. Scammers love fake airdrops because they know people get excited about free stuff. Watch out for:
- Websites asking you to “connect your wallet” to claim tokens (they may drain it instead)
- Anyone asking for your seed phrase or private key (this is always a scam, no exceptions)
- Offers requiring you to pay a fee upfront to “unlock” your free tokens
If random tokens appear in your wallet and a suspicious site is asking you to take action, be very careful. Legitimate airdrops will never ask for your seed phrase. Not once, not ever.
A Quick Tax Heads-Up
The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) treats airdropped tokens as taxable income at the time you receive them, based on their fair market value. So even “free” crypto may need to go on your tax return. We covered this in more detail in our crypto taxes article over in the Knowledge Centre.
Practical Takeaway
Airdrops can be genuinely exciting and occasionally valuable. But treat any unexpected crypto offer the same way you would treat a scratch ticket someone leaves on your car windshield: hopeful but cautious. Never share your seed phrase, verify everything through official project channels, and keep your CRA obligations in mind.
