Everyone’s heard of Bitcoin. But then someone mentions Ethereum and suddenly the conversation gets confusing. Are they the same thing? Which one should you care about? Do you have to pick one?
They were built for different jobs.
Bitcoin was created in 2009 with one job: be digital money. Send value from one person to another, anywhere in the world, without a bank in the middle. That’s it. Simple, focused, powerful.
Ethereum came along in 2015 with a bigger ambition. Its creator, Vitalik Buterin, asked: what if a blockchain could run programs? Not just move money, but execute contracts, power apps, and run entire financial systems automatically?
Think of it this way: Bitcoin is a calculator. It does one thing extremely well. Ethereum is a smartphone — it runs apps.
Supply: Scarce vs. Flexible
Bitcoin has a hard cap of 21 million coins. Ever. No exceptions. This scarcity is built into the code and is one of the reasons people call it “digital gold.” The fewer there are, the more each one could be worth — simple supply and demand.
Ethereum has no hard cap. New ETH is created continuously, though at a controlled rate. After a 2022 upgrade called “The Merge,” Ethereum became dramatically more efficient and actually burns a portion of transaction fees, which can reduce the supply over time. But it’s still fundamentally more flexible than Bitcoin’s rigid scarcity.
Bitcoin processes transactions relatively slowly — roughly 7 transactions per second — because it prioritizes security over speed. It’s like a vault: extremely secure, but you don’t run a coffee shop out of it.
Ethereum is faster and designed for higher transaction volumes. It powers decentralized apps, NFT marketplaces, lending platforms, and more. The tradeoff: “gas fees” (Ethereum’s transaction costs) can spike when the network is busy.
Which One is “Better”?
Neither — they’re built for different things.
If you want a simple store of value, something closer to digital gold that’s been battle-tested for 15+ years: Bitcoin.
If you want exposure to a programmable financial ecosystem — DeFi, digital contracts, tokenized assets — Ethereum is the layer those things are built on.
Most serious crypto investors hold both.
